Sharing The DRM Free iTunes

The biggest music software program known to the industry has announced some of the biggest changes the music industry has seen in years. Apple announced at the latest MacWorld Expo this year that they are finally making two long awaited updates to their iTunes software and service. iTunes has managed to become the top selling music store in the digital era of downloads in just a quick six years.

The first change will become effective on April 1, 2009 and this is not an April Fools Joke either. This day will signal the end of the iTunes .99 cents pricing structure for all their songs. The new prices will range from .69 – .99 – 1.29 per song based on the “newness” of the song. I think this is not only good news for the record industry and something they have been pushing Apple to do for years. I know for myself I am actually pretty excited about the new structure because there are a lot of “classic” or older songs that I would love to download and hopefully if they are at the new .69 price they will be added to my music library on day one.

DRM, Defective by DesignThe other big change that was made official at the MacWorld Expo is the confirmation the dreaded DRM anti piracy protection has been removed from 8 million songs and another 2 million by April. Bringing an end to DRM on iTunes.  Yeah we can finally freely share our music with everyone now!

There is however one caveat to having DRM free music. All the songs that you may have in your iTunes library and for a lot of us that number could be in the hundreds if not thousands of songs. If we want those songs to be DRM free iTunes will be charging us .30 or .40 cents (i have seen both reported so far). So that part really kind of stinks for us as we are being penalized I guess for having purchased the songs before they could get the DRM thing straightened out. Oh well I gues I won’t be sharing those songs anytime soon because I am certainly not going to pay that fee to have them removed.
