Slow Evolution Of Operating Systems To Choose

How much longer will we see the lions share of operating system market dominance go to Microsoft and it’s library of Windows operating systems? We have been a world of technology operating on a system of Microsoft Windows for decades now. For those of you that pay attention to market share reports you may already know that over the last two years we have slowly seen some cracks in the dominance over the market that Microsoft has held for so long.

For those of you that don’t really pay attention to that stuff I will make this brief and to the point I hope ;-) Last December in 2008 we saw Microsoft market share drop just below 90% for the first time to 89.6%. So who’s starting to make some headway? Why it’s that little company by the name of Apple of course. The OS of Apple have been showing some big gains in the last two years.

Apple Jumping Out Of The WaterI think a big tell tale sign that the tide might actually be turning is in the way the market share is measured. You see it’s based on how computers make their connections to the internet. Basically during the week when most people connect to the internet that majority of us are doing it through Windows operating systems. Why is that? Because the majority of us are connecting from work! The interesting part happens when night time comes and weekends arrive. There is a clear drop in users using Windows and a big spike in people using operating systems from Apple and Linux to a degree as well.

What does it all mean when you break it down? More people are turning to other operating systems when it comes to their own personal choice. Slowly but surely we will see this movement towards other operating systems swing the pendulum of dominance away from Microsoft and bring it back to center. Not that it was ever at center in the first place.
